Overview:  John Henry Mitchell, ETR3, USN (Retired), 03 December 1954 – 15 May 1976, spent the last year of his life studying, learning, and enjoying the USC experience through classes (making the Dean’s List), friends and professors, a fraternity, and the fulfilling life of a young college student.  Tops in his Navy classes before USC, John Henry was a local graduate of Columbia’s Dreher High School (1973), where he was an honor student, a National Merit Scholar, a member of the Student Council, Key Club, and the Blue Print (school newspaper), as well an avid member of the Dreher Forensic Debate Society. Charles T. Mitchell, CAPT, USAF (Ret) (USC 1975-1979), Ruth Felicia Mitchell, Ph.D. (USC BA 1977, MA 1979), and Graeme B. Mitchell (USC 1980-1982), have established this endowment to honor the memory, the military service, and the love of education of their older brother.

Eligibility Requirements: The scholarship will be awarded by the scholarship committee of the USC Alumni Association’s Veterans Alumni Council to U.S. military veteran students attending classes at the Columbia campus, and who maintain a 2.5 GPA (undergraduate) or 3.0 GPA (graduate), successfully submit an honorable discharge DD-214, and submit an essay demonstrating the applicant’s leadership skills, service, sacrifice, and education goals. The award may be renewed if the recipient maintains a 2.5 GPA (undergraduate) or 3.0 GPA (graduate).

Additional Information: Applicants must submit an honorable discharge DD-214 and an essay (500 words) as outlined above.
